July 2011: Herons aplenty

Taking Flight

***

The Great Blue Herons, stately and elegant in their own way, are not without an occasional element of weirdness. I have seen the tiniest of birds chase a fully grown heron, at least one hundred times the size of the tiny pursuer. But the threatening stance of the stately wader about to strike is something to behold.
